Why Scales Lie!
Dieting can be tough, restricting food that we enjoy often
controls our emotions, how we view food in general and also
how we view ourselves. For anyone that has tried one of the
latest fashionable ‘shake diets’ or ‘low /no carb’ diets it is
especially tough. Yes they have most likely lost weight in the
short term according to the scales, but they need to balance
this against feeling lethargic and irritable and generally
restricting their whole life around their diet. This is not a
lifestyle it is simply eating to exist.
To make matters worse we now know that until you have lost at around 5 kilograms, you probably haven’t lost anything more than some energy stores (glycogen) and water! You see, when you restrict carbs (the only energy your brain and heart function on), your body uses the supply of carbohydrates and the associated water first. This can account for 5 kilograms before you even start losing any body fat!
One of the challenges I face is when clients see a dietitian is to get those seeking a better body shape or size back onto a realistic lifelong diet program. The issue with this is that when we first reintroduce carbohydrates the body will store them (this is a good thing) and also around 4 grams of water with each gram of carbohydrate. This leads to an initial weight gain.
The plus to this is that most clients I have seen recently have been rapt to have this ‘weight gain’! This is because they have reported much more important measures of success. They have more energy, no emotional stress towards eating, clothes that are fitting better (yes they are actually still losing body fat) and are generally easy people to be around. They can enjoy eating the foods they love because they come to understand their eating behaviours better.
The everyday bathroom scale does not discriminate between water and fat (although some more advanced scales will tell you they measure body fat). So for those seeking a positive lifestyle and a better body image the question is this. Would you rather be ruled by a set of scales that only measure success in black and white, or would you rather learn lifelong eating skills and techniques and understand how to really measure your success! The choice is yours!
Why is a dietitian different to other 'nutrition related' specialists
A dietitian not only has the scientific background to offer nutrition solutions for most medical conditions, they are trained in making sure that the solutions they offer will fit with your lifestyle as much as possible.
At Everybody we understand that most people don't want to make significant change to their life and routine and as such our dietitian Hannah Every-Hall will take the time to gain a true understanding of your current lifestyle and suggest changes that will give you the benefits you require whilst allowing you to live as normal a life as possible.
A dietitian will also make sure that any deletions or additions suggested to your diet will not leave you at risk of other health issues. This is achieved because dietitians have the knowledge to scientifically evaluate your diet and ensure you are always receiving the correct amount of nutrition from your diet. They don't believe in the latest fad diet which usually are based on taking out a major energy source (such as low carb diets) as they understand that not only are these not sustainable long term, but that they also pose great health risks to the dieter.
If you are serious about maintaining your health for the long term, understanding more about your body and what it really needs to make long term health possible make an appointment today!

Cook patties on a foil-lined grill tray under a preheated grill on medium-high, or on a barbecue hot plate, for 5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown on both sides and cooked through. Meanwhile, toast the bread rolls. Assemble rolls with English spinach, tomato, cooked chicken patty, snow pea sprouts and capsicum. Serve with chilli sauce on the side.
